VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The rising price of gas could mean a higher cab fare in the future.

The BC Taxi Association wants the Passenger Transportation board to really take gas prices into consideration in its yearly review of fares.

Association president Mohan Kang says many of his members expressed concern about lost revenue at their general meeting earlier this month.

“Even when you’re spending more money you’re getting less benefit out of it. You’re getting less net income for your own. So, there would be some impact on the taxi drivers, no doubt in that one,” he says.

Kang seems hopeful the board will take those concerns into consideration.

“I believe the board understands that gas prices have gone up and will probably go up more,” says Kang.

“Gas prices are one part of the quotation for the taxi-limo index price. They might decide to give some meters a raise.”

He says he doesn’t know when the board will make their decision on taxi fares.
