VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Why now? That’s what a tax cut advocate is asking after a member of the BC Liberal government that introduced a carbon tax is now seeking temporary relief at the pumps from the New Democrats.

Kris Sims, the BC Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says Opposition leader Andrew Wilkinson‘s push to reduce the cost of motor fuel and carbon taxes in this province doesn’t go far enough.

“While I’m glad to see any politician calling for lower taxes –I don’t care what party– that’s a good thing to have, but we don’t want it to be temporary. We want to see massive tax reductions at the pumps for BC drivers.”

“We want the carbon tax gone. We wanted it gone before it was even started here in BC and we want to stay positive, so any time anybody’s advocating for lower taxes, that’s awesome and we’d like to support that call, but we don’t want it to be temporary.”

Sims is also critical of the federal government’s push for a national carbon tax at a time when drivers in Metro Vancouver are paying more for gas than anywhere else in North America.

“It’s revenue generation. They’re just calling it a carbon tax, so they can get money.”

She adds local drivers suffer more than other Canadians because total taxes account for 51 cents of every litre bought at the pump in Metro Vancouver.
