OTTAWA – Are you feeling the pain at the pump? An advocacy group is calling on the federal government to scrap some of the taxes that jack up the price of a litre of gas.
Standing across the street from Parliament Hill, Aaron Wudruck with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says it’s time Canadians get some relief when they fill up.
He’s calling on the Trudeau government to get rid of the federal excise tax on gas, which makes up about 10 cents per litre at the pump.
“We think this is a reasonable ask, given the price of gas and given the fact that highways and roads are generally a provincial responsibility,” says Wudruck.
He says it would cost the feds four or five billion dollars in revenue.
“Canadians are paying that right now. They have repeatedly said that cost of living is a very high concern. So, leaving that money in the pockets of Canadians, I think, is a wise policy choice.”
Wudrick says the highest gas prices in Canada are in Vancouver, while the lowest are in Saskatchewan. Although, all prices will rise in the coming years, as the federal carbon pricing plan is implemented.
The CTF is urging provinces to lower or eliminate their gas taxes, something that is being proposed by Conservatives in the Ontario election.
